    1776                              State Pattern reproduction

    Obverse:  MASSACHUSET  TS  STATE  I d  L M
Reverse:  LIBERTY AND  VIRTUE  COPLEY  1776

    Weight:  172.7 g   (11.19 grams)                  Diameter:  31.7 mm

Comments:  This is a silver reproduction of a unique Massachusetts copper pattern penny. This copy was produced by the Copley Coin Company of Boston; it is close to the original size but slightly under weight as it is made of silver while the original was made from copper. The denomination on the obverse has a break in the letter d, it reads: "1d L[awful] M[oney]. Lawful money was the term used for the lawful exchange rate of 6s to the Spanish milled dollar. This would rate the penny at 12 to the shilling or 72 to the dollar. Both the obverse and reverse are quite similar in style to the original except for the addition of "COPLEY" to the reverse.

Provenance:  From the Robert H. Gore, Jr. Numismatic Collection.
