1760        Zelinka 2-A                       Voce Populi Copper

    Obverse:  VOCE +   POPULI
    Reverse:  HIBER   N   IA   + +   1760

    Weight:  98.1 g   (6.36 grams)                  Diameter:  26.0 mm

Comments:   Nelson 4. The obverse has a cross in the legend, as do obverses 4 and 6. Obverse 4 can be distinguished by the bust, known as the older head and the position of the letters relative to the bust. The P is further down the forhead than on die 6 and the V is closer t the bust that on die 4. The reverse A shows an 8 string harp. On this die the strings are bunched together leaving a large portion of the upper section of the harp without string.

Provenance:  From the Robert H. Gore, Jr. Numismatic Collection.

    Obverse:  VOCE x   POPULI
    Reverse:  HIBER   N   IA   + +   1760

    Weight:  112.9 g   (7.31 grams)                  Diameter:  26.8 mm

Comments:  Nelson 15. The obverse can be distinguished by the X shaped design in the legend and by the position of the I which is below the bust. The only other similar die is 4 where the I almost touches the bust (illuistrated below) while here it is further away. The reverse is die A as described above in 3-A.

Provenance:  From the Robert H. Gore, Jr. Numismatic Collection.

    Obverse:  VOCE +     POPULI
    Reverse:  . HIBE   R   NIA .   1760

    Weight:  98.4 g   (6.37 grams)                  Diameter:  28.1 mm

Comments:  Nelson 2. The obverse can be identified from the other varieties with the cross in the legend by the position of final I, which is below the bust but unlike die 3 (illustrated above) in die 4 the bottom stroke of the I almost touches the bust. The reverse is very easy to detect in that it is the only die with a harp having vertical strings (7 strings). Also the bow on the numeral 6 is very large and the ascending curve goes into the baseline above it making the date look like 1700. Note there are small die breaks seen as dots between the numbers in the date.

Provenance:  From the Robert H. Gore, Jr. Numismatic Collection.

1760        Zelinka 6-C                       Voce Populi Copper

    Obverse:  VOCE   x     POPULI
    Reverse:  HIBER   N   IA   + +   1760

    Weight:  105.0 g   (6.80 grams)                  Diameter:  27.0 mm

Comments:  Nelson 9. The obverse is know as the large or stearn bust variety. Zelinka lists the obverse legend as having a + but this example clearly has an x shaped design about one third of the distance between the E in Voce and the P in populi. In this variety the bottom stroke of the final I in populi is near the bottom and is close to but does not touch the bust. On the reverse the harp has eight strings. Note that the lower right frame of the harp contains a flower (six dots in a ring with one in the center) and just above is a larger circle with a hole in the center. No other reverse die has these features.

Provenance:  From the Robert H. Gore, Jr. Numismatic Collection.
